Loved this! You’re so talented 😊 Btw, who played the guitar part on Five Rubles?

I haven't seen this film but shall seek it out, thank you. For me, Midnight Cowboy was the first soundtrack I remember taking me away when it was on tv as a kid - it still does exactly the same

I remember being affected by John Carpenter’s score for Halloween, which scared me. I also first heard Moonlight Serenade when watching the miniseries The Last Convertible. I was hooked on big band music for a long time after that. Those were all early 80s, I think. Star Wars, absolutely (The Imperial Death March is still one of my personal theme songs!).

Awesome article !💕

Thanks Sheila. Scary movie music makes its own impact, doesn't it.

Wonderful, Anna. I hadn't thought about My Bodyguard for a long time.

Like Isabel, Star Wars was the first time (age 7, maybe) that I noticed music in a movie, in that case feeling a full body buzz or aliveness or I don't know what, but I'd never experienced anything like that... being totally overtaken by the movie because of the music.

For some reason the theme from Kramer vs. Kramer really stuck with me, from a similar age, but obviously a totally different type of experience: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Db4ptyvYbds I loved that movie so much.

I love the melody-finding in the Calypso tune. I can hear it! Calypso always makes me think of Vonnegut and Cat's Cradle.

Star Wars for sure! Reminds me of that one time when I was 12 when John Williams, who was a friend of my teacher, came to listen to my violin lesson... I knew who he was so I turned beet red and forgot how to play.

Do I have to choose just one song, from just one movie? 😩😜

I remember watching a Star Wars in the cinema when I was a girl. I later understood the idea of a leitmotif, but in the moment I could clearly feel the story through the music.

When I watched “The Greatest Showman“ the songs were a delight. I particularly like “This is me” and it has become a life anthem.

Thank you for bringing this to light. It is so true that a song can become everything!

Star Wars... what an effect that soundtrack has had on humanity! I'll have to check out The Greatest Showman. Thanks Isabel!

I've often been slightly puzzled by the near-universally reported mnemonic association between music and events (in this case, movies, but it's clearly not limited to film) - the reason is that it doesn't actually occur for me; There's music that's important to me, but I don't associate any with particular events or phenomena in my past. True, in the case of film, I'm not that into film, except the escapist variety, and they tend to leave ones' emotions alone - so perhaps I'm a cold fish...

I much enjoyed this piece today, Anna. Hearing another human pontificate on the relationship between a good movie and a memorable sound score was fun. And a reminder that we as individuals are not so unique in our responses to visual and auditory stimulation. Thank you!

Great piece. We saw Harold and Maude in SF on Valentine's Day. I had forgotten how much Cat Stevens' music fills it.

I was just thinking about this idea. I can’t think of any old movie themes right now because the one from severance is so stuck in my head right now. I feel like it is a theme for the time. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=BNQS5u7SHiI

I haven't watched it because I'm a sissy. And that track reinforces my fear!
